GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND: Neil Armstrong was a self-described nerdy engineer who on July 20, 1969, became a global hero for being the first man to walk on the moon. Armstrong has died at age 82 following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures.
TIME WELL SPENT: Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the lunar surface, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.
STARS AND STRIPES: By landing on the moon first, Neil Armstrong, the commander of Apollo 11, and Buzz Aldrin marked the first American victory in the space race with the then-Soviet Union.
“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” Armstrong said.
